The Drama Desk Award-winning National Yiddish Theatre – Folksbiene sponsors The David and Clare Rosen Memorial Play Contest


The Drama Desk Award-winning National Yiddish Theatre – Folksbiene sponsors the David and Clare Rosen Memorial Contest, a unique new play competition that encourages artists to create new theatre projects in Yiddish, or based on Yiddish sources. The goal of the competition will be to provide opportunities for writers and directors to conceive and develop new works that will add to the great legacy of the Yiddish theatre. Finalists will be workshopped during the the 2013-14 season and the winner will be showcased in 2015 as part of Folksbiene’s centennial celebration.

A Unique Opportunity for Writers and Directors

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the National Yiddish Theatre – Folksbiene is launching KULTURFEST: the First Chana Mlotek International Festival of Jewish Performing Arts to take place in New York City in June of 2015. The David and Clare Rosen Memorial Contest offers valuable professional encouragements, including workshop productions for semifinalist projects, access to professional production facilities and talent, and media exposure. The contest’s winning project will be eligible to be showcased during Folksbiene’s historic centennial celebration in 2015.

• New full-length plays or musicals, or mixed media projects incorporating performance and/or music.
• Projects written in Yiddish, or in English that creatively incorporate Yiddish.
• Translations or adaptations of existing works either into Yiddish or into English reconceived for modern audiences.
• Projects must be previously unproduced or have not been presented in public (readings or workshops are acceptable).
• Multi-media projects incorporating performance, music, and/or other theatrical elements may be submitted by directors.

What to Submit
Hard-copy manuscript or pdf of project (full script/libretto)
Cover page of manuscript must have the contact information (name, address, email, phone number) of all collaborators
Two-page summary, or synopsis of project in English
Professional bio of author(s)/collaborators
Previous production history of project
A letter that states that the rights to perform the piece reside with the writers, or if not, a letter containing the name and contact information of who holds the rights/option and for what duration
A letter stating that the writers have the rights to any adaptation or unoriginal piece

Musicals must also submit (in addition to the above):
CD sampler or demo of 6 to 8 songs (labeled)
Please submit separate bios for all musical collaborators

Contest Semi-finalists will announced in the winter of 2013 (Winter Cabaret)
Semi-finalist projects will workshopped during the 2013-14 season.
Grand Prize Winner announced June 2014 (Folksbiene Gala Concert).
Presentation of Grand Prize Winner anticipated for 2015

Other Important Information
Folksbiene will appoint a screening committee to evaluate submissions. Screening committee assists Folksbiene artistic director and executive director in selecting contest semi-finalists for workshop.

A blue-ribbon panel comprised of prominent theatre makers judges shows in workshop, choosing Grand Prize Winner! As of present, the blue-ribbon panel will consist of Emanuel Azenberg, Jason Robert Brown, John Marans, Joe DiPietro, and Israel Horovitz.
